Sentry Placement:

A proud engineer admires his erection. What a mighty one it is too.

There's an infinite number of sentry placements on Dustbowl. You can stick them anywhere. But clearly some places are better than others, so here's a rundown of the best positions I know (oo er, matron, etc). And just to make it even more interesting, I've given each place a name as well, sometimes using words that aren't even in the dictionary. Learn about Dustbowl sentry placement and get an English lesson thrown in for free... now that's value.

On each map we start nearest the grate and work back to the cappoint. Originally this section contained just about every sentry location I've ever used on Dustbowl, but then I thought 'Nope, let them play the game and discover for themselves different locations', so these are just the ones I've had the most success with. But there's plenty more interesting and varied places to put them... you just gotta get out there, play the map, and find them for yourself. Okay, okay, there's no need to get shirty about it I'm not, I'm just trying to encourage these lovely people to experiment with different positions. Can I make rude joke about 'experimenting with different positions'?. No. Bah.

Map 1:
The Gulley Glorifyer

Keep watch along the gulley with this placement. Big ammo bag in the round turret behind you.

The Hut Head Chop

Scalp them with this respawn exit position. There's an ammo bag in the hut underneath too. How thoughtful.

The Suicider

If the attackers want to remove this one, they'll have to either use spies or go on a suicide run. Very tricky to build, since you need to be in exactly the right place, but an amusing little fellow.

The Ammo Bag Maker

This will chop up any attackers coming out of the respawn, and you can then use their ammo bags to keep it healthy. One of my favourites.

The Rooftop Rambler

This little friend will take out anyone going under the big archway, will shoot and attackers through the window, and will happily sweep across the whole roof area. Very handy.

The Cappoint Castrator

Sitting in it's little doorway, with ammo bags nearby, this is a very useful sentry that will guard the approach to the cappoint easily.

The Goalkeeper

Ah yes, the definitive sentry placement for map 1. Stick this fellow up and drill through anyone attempting to move the flag onto the cappoint. You need to place it as far forward as you can to ensure you can cover the whole of the cappoint approach, but this then makes you more vulnerable to grenades, so use the ammo bag behind a lot.

Attacker's sentry:

Keep watch over the grenades with this little chap.

Map 2:
The Lonely One

This poor sentry sits out in the middle of nowhere all on it's own, something that I'm never very keen on. But if you stand nearby this one and keep it topped up with health and ammo, it will rack up oodles of kills for you and smack those attackers down a bit. And that's good news.

The Downward Dumplicator

Standard sentry placement (anywhere up here on the roof will do) that will happily shoot the tops of attackers heads off. Useful, but dull. A bit like me.

The Panther

This sentry sits in the dark and all attackers see are it's twin guns blazing away like a pair of eyes. You should be able to keep this one going for a fair while, pinning the attackers down at the grate exit.

The Corner Combustulator

Hide a sentry round the corner and watch wave after wave of attackers get caught in it's fire. Ideal for guarding any dropped flags in this area. It's very open to grenades of course, but it surprising how effective this simple placement actually is.

The Archway Argh-u-lator

A bog standard sentry placement, almost guaranteed to be witnessed in every game. But there are ammo bags just round the corner, it can be difficult for attackers to remove, and it will get lots of kills, so it's easy to see why it's so popular.

The Helper

This used to be my favourite sentry placement on map 2, until one day I managed to rocket a flag carrier onto the cappoint. Bah. Anyway, this one will watch over the cappoint area but has the unfortunate tendency to help attackers with the flag along a bit. Not what you want really, plus it's open to attack from the back. Oh well... I still like it.

The Overviewer

Shooting across the heads of any cappoint defenders, this placement could be your last line of defence.

Attacker's sentry:

Stop defenders coming back for grenades with this handy little chap.

Map 3:
The Grate Gasher

Stick a sentry inside the building to kill the attackers before they have a chance to exit the grate.

The Stepulator

Hidden away on the little corner on the steps, this will shoot anyone in the back who tries to go along the alley, and will also happily remove anyone trying to use the steps as well.

The Leaner

Leaning out from it's ledge, this one will give any attackers a nasty surprise as soon as they poke their head around the corner.

The Guardian

One for the alley. This one sits up on the bridge and will remove anyone coming down. Stick two up there for maximum effectiveness.

The Crossfirer

Bit dull this one. If you place it right, you can crouch behind it on an ammo bag and just keep hammering at it to top up the health and ammo, but it's not much fun. But it will happily fire across at anyone who tries to cross the bridge.

HMS Invincible

Her Majesty's Sentry Invincible. After careful study, I eventually came up with this, quite possibly the best sentry location on the whole of Dustbowl's three maps. Anyone crossing the bridge gets shot in the back. Anyone crossing with the flag gets shot and the flag typically then falls into the trench. Anyone who appears at the top of the trench ladder gets it in the face. Top this all off with the fact that it's totally protected from attackers. The only person who can take it out is an attacking spy. Awesome.

The Sentinel

Bit boring, but it does the job. Just sits up there watching, waiting, having a go at anyone who appears on the bridge. Needs constant engineer attention though.

The Slap In The Face

A particular favourite of mine. I think I may have invented it, because I don't remember seeing anyone else doing it before I did. But hey... let's not argue about it. Just as an attacker is about to cap the flag, he gets a face full of rocket from this little fellow.

Attacker's Sentry:

On the ledge opposite the respawn exit in the alley. Any defenders attempting to exit their respawn will be nicely spread across the walls.

So which are the crucial three?

Which ones are truly the best on each map? Which locations will have your sentry twirling and turning as it locks onto attacker after attacker? Well now, if you really want to impress your friends and colleagues, these are the three sentries to build:

Map 1: The Goalkeeper

This will guard the whole cappoint approach area nicely. Watch for spies throwing grenades up at it.

Map 2: The Overviewer

Not perfect, but when coupled with snipers and HWGuys or soldiers, this will form the cornerstone of your Map 2 cappoint defence.

Map 3: HMS Invincible

Simply the best. You'll have to learn the exact place to put it. Too far forward and it's open to attack from the trench. Too far back and it won't cover the bridge at all. But well worth perfecting.
